Rounds 5 & 6 - Gulf Radical Cup, Dubai Autodrome

Kronfli and Greensall dominate on both days

The Gulf Radical Cup got the first day of the Dubai Motorsport Festival weekend off to a scintillating start as the ultra-fast Le Mans style sportscars got the event underway.

Bassam Kronfli (EVO Middle East) was in top form dominating Race 1 with an emphatic lights to flag victory in his 380 bhp V8 powered Radical SR8. He also set pole position and the fastest race lap. Harvey Boulter (Porton Group) came in second in the Radical SR8 LM just ahead of last weekend’s Bahrain Desert 400 double winner, John Stanley.

The highly competitive Class C was won by one of the UK’s most prolific race winners, Nigel Greensall who was having a guest ride in David Moran’s machine. Not far behind was young Saudi driver Fahad Algosaibi (Algosaibi Travel) with Abu Dhabi’s Humaid Al Masaood taking his first podium position in third place having worked his way past young Emirati Sultan Mahboubi who had to settle for fourth after a race long battle.

Bassam Kronfli stormed to victory again in Race 2 just as he did the previous day - again scoring an overall win and victory in Class A. He was simply in a class of his own taking the chequered flag by over 12 seconds ahead of runner-up Harvey Boulter who had to work hard throughout the race after fighting off John Stanley and Cabell Fisher, with Stanley claiming third ahead of Fisher.

Once again in Class C it was visiting British driver Nigel Greensall who repeated his win over second placed Saudi teenager Fahad Algosaibi. A dramatic start saw the Emirati 16 year old, Sultan Mahboubi spin in Turn 1 which saw him sidelined for the rest of the race. Greensall managed to get a good margin over Algosaibi with Khalid Al Zarooni (Dubai Sports City) taking third place despite driving with a fever.

Class A race winner Bassam Kronfli said, “Race 1 was great I had a good start and kept it smooth and really it was a comfortable win. On Race Day 2 I had a few problems before the race which affected my concentration but I managed to overcome this. The Code 60 restart was a little confusing and I was a little shocked to see John Stanley go ahead but I composed myself and regained the lead. It worked out fine with two wins this weekend.”

Second place in both GRC races Harvey Boulter, “Had a good race weekend. Race Day 1 was very good for me because I managed to finish second despite starting from fifth on the grid. Car was running well all weekend but on Day 2 I made a mistake, missed a gear, lost some places but managed to fight back. The Dubai Autodrome International Circuit configuration is great to drive on with the long back straight where these Radicals can really stretch their legs. Very nice indeed.”

Winner of both GRC Class C races Nigel Greensall, “Absolutely fantastic. Really great to be here as part of the Gulf Radical Cup in Dubai. Great circuit, good organisation. Good quality drivers all very keen to improve and together they have a great spirit”.

Second place in both Class C races Fahad Algosaibi, “Overall I really enjoyed the Dubai Motorsport Festival weekend. It was a great learning experience for me. I had a very good first race and was really happy with my second race where I had to recover from an early incident and two seconds behind a driver like Nigel (Greensall) is very pleasing.”

Third in GRC Class on Day 2 Khalid Al Zarooni, “It has been a tough weekend with gearbox problems and I have a had a high temperature all weekend. So starting from the back of the grid and finishing on the podium makes me very happy. It was good to have Nigel (Greensall) competing with us because a driver of his experience helps us raise our game.”
