Bassam Kronfli (EVO Middle East) decided to make the most of his opportunity whilst Championship contender Fahad AlGosaibi (Algosaibi Travel) had to sit this one out.
The young Saudi racer, now racing in F.BMW Pacific, was observing a restricted racing rule, and watched helplessly as Kronfli bagged another couple of wins to take a 53 point lead in the series. However, with the need to drop two rounds and with double points on offer at the last race, anything could happen – and probably will!
Making his debut in a new Radical SR8 was the charming Eric Charles (continental-circus.com) who got to grips with the 380bhp sports racer well enough to gain Pole Position by two tenths of a second. However it was Kronfli that led from the start with Charles in tow. But it was young Sultan Mahboobi (Top Most Freight) who barged Charles out of the way in Turn One to take second although Charles recovered his second place within two laps and held this position to the end of the race with Mahboobi finishing third. Interestingly, it was Kronfli who made the fastest lap at 1:02.169 in his 250bhp SR3.
Also making his debut was the talented young Dubai kart racer, Rami Azzam (Multiplex), who was having his very first race in a high-downforce 205bhp Radical PR6 Prosport in the Invitation Class along with Charles and Henry van den Heuval in a similar PR6. Azzam drove really well to finish seventh overall and enjoyed every minute of it. He said that it was “just like racing a big kart!!”. Let’s hope we see him in Class C next season.
In the second race, Charles made full use of his new 2.6 litre V8 to grab the lead into Turn One and try as he might, Kronfli was at a serious power disadvantage in his Class C Radical SR3 but finishing the race only six tenths of a second behind. Mahboobi showed great pace to finish third overall with Humaid Al Masaood (Mugg & Bean) having a better race in his 2009 spec Radical SR3 to finish third in Class C ahead of David Field (Aviva) and Azzam who finished 6th overall.
The last and final rounds of the season on 24th April will be crucial as double points will be on offer and Fahad Algosaibi will be out to gain maximum points.
Rounds 17 and 18 of the Gulf Radical Cup will take place at the Dubai Autodrome on the 24th of April with the DAMC National Raceday 8.
