This event promised to be an interesting contest between the young Saudi driver, Fahad Algosaibi (Algosaibi Travel) and the more experienced Bassam Kronfli (EVO Middle East). With Bahrain based Fahad unable to attend qualifying, Kronfli was unopposed for the coveted ‘pole position’ lapping in 1:41.631, with Khalid Al Zarooni (Dubai Sports City) sharing the front row of the rolling start. On the second row we had Humaid Al-Masaood (Mugg & Bean) and John Stanley (Ardentia). Unfortunately, Stanley suffered a technical problem with his borrowed SR3 in qualifying which meant he would have to race his SR8 in the Invitation class along with the Caterhams of Jeremy Lester and Ramzi Moutran and the PR6 Prosports of Henry van den Heuval and Phil McGovern.
Race 1 saw Stanley in the lone SR8 take a commanding lead and race win, with the SR3 pack fighting for position behind him. But it was Kronfli, the fastest of the SR3s who got the better of Fahad Algosaibi to finish second after fighting off the fast improving Al Zarooni.
Race 2 was quite the best race of the weekend, with high drama as poleman Kronfli’s great start was wasted as the drivers were slowed with a Code 60 flag whilst young Sultan Mahboubi’s stranded SR3 was moved to a safe place. This allowed Algosaibi to get ahead of Kronfli at the restart and setup a very close race for the two leading drivers. Interest then centred on guest driver Phil McGovern in one of the single seat PR6s who got ahead of the SR3 pack to take third place, as he came under increasing pressure from Carl Rolaston and Al Zarooni. The leading cars were never more than a cars length or two apart and circulated at such a pace as to come across backmarkers at the last corner of the race. With Algosaibi leaving a small gap on the inside of the turn, Kronfli made a classic last lap lunge and forced his way through to take the chequered flag, with a disappointed Algosaibi in second and a remarkable third place for the talented McGovern in the PR6.
Rounds 13 and 14 of the Gulf Radical Cup will take place at the Dubai Autodrome on 19th and 20th of Feburary with the DAMC National Raceday 6
