Going into the last two rounds of the Gulf Radical Cup, the championship title would be decided on the very last race of the season. Heading the points table was Bahrain’s Team 777 and Dubai’s Bassam Kronfli (EVO Middle East). To make things even more exciting, both races offered double points towards the championship title.
Even with SR3 drivers Bob George and John Stanley in Europe competing in the Radical European Masters at Monza this weekend, and Abu Dhabi’s Humaid Al Masaood in the USA, there were 5 different models of Radical Sportscar on the circuit.
Race one got off to a flying start with pole sitter, Cabell Fisher (Khaleeji Motorsport) making good use of the 360bhp Powertec V8 engine to power off to a lead he was to keep to the end of the race, winning the Invitation Class Trophy. However, in Class C, we had Fahad Al Musalem (Team 777) taking the lead, closely followed by Bassam Kronfli (EVO Middle East) and David Moran (DJ Racing). Harvey Boulter in the Invitation Class 455bhp SR8LM, clearly decided to let the two championship protagonists fight it out and stayed behind the front runners.
Khalid Al Zarooni made a great first time showing in his red and yellow Dubai Sports City liveried Radical SR3 finishing his first race in 6th position behind Boulter as did Boelo Lussenburg in the 205bhp Radical PR6. Carl Rolaston spun out of contention on the last lap.
So it was down to the last race to see who would be crowned Champion. Fisher again made a quick start and headed straight to his second win of the day to allow the Al Musalem and Kronfli battle to take place comfortably behind him. This was a battle of nerves now as any significant mistake, resulting in a spin or DNF would almost certainly lose the championship. However, both parties held their nerve, particularly Al Musalem who dominated the race to record Team 777’s eleventh win of the season.
Kronfli
finished on the podium for the fifteenth time this season as 2008 Vice Champion
with Andrew Lemon in third place and David Moran fourth. MORE PICTURES TO
